Nervosa West Hollywood Concert reviews
Still very funny, but a step backward, creatively
I can't comment on that, beyond that a lot of it is very solid, centering around the conflict between humor and taste, what's funny to you may be offensive to me, etc. Apparently the bulk of his material was previously featured on This American Life. All in all a performance that's pretty good/not fantastic.
What _did_ bother me was that Nervosa used previous material dating back to at least My Public Secret Journal Live (2007) to set up the newer material. Really? Come on, Bahoosky, you should respect your audience better than that. I paid $35 for a performance that includes jokes/bits that are at least seven years old?
The opening comedian, Chris Gethard, was very funny. I'd be curious to see this guy again next time he rolls through San Diego. His central bit was about a trip he and his new wife took to some place called Gatorland, which I'd never heard of but is apparently a big deal down in Orlando.
My wife and I saw his last tour My Girlfriend's Boyfriend on our honeymoon. Having owned all of his work since Two Drink Mike (2006), I'm familiar with Brigleby's material. After this performance, I'm not so sure now. That, dovetailed with Sleepwalk With Me, left me thinking that he could be the next Spalding Gray. I'd go see him again, but would probably read advance reviews first next time around, to figure out if it isn't something I could just find in the NPR archives instead.
